Success Stories
At age 37 my wife Nancy and I were what most would have considered successful. Nancy had her MBA and I had developed a successful brokerage and pension planning practice. We were happy with what we were doing and we were not looking for a change. As fate would have it, a persistent young man (who had just turned 21 years old, and is the founder of the AdvancingWithUs team) introduced us to this business. We did not let our egos get in the way. We already experienced what a six-figure residual income was like with our other business, and we had a great lifestyle. But a good idea is a good idea, and we knew that this was a good idea. We asked ourselves, "why not?" The stability of this company and the consistency of the reorder rate convinced us that this could be as reliable as our pension business, but more profitable.

Our problem was time. My practice already took up 50 hours per week. Our children, their schools, sports, and social commitments took another 15 to 20 hours of our time every week. Any busy parent knows the drill. I remember saying to Alan "where am I going to find the time?" Then, I said to myself "if I could find the time to play golf, if I could find the time to coach, then I could find the time to do this." Nancy and I simply stole some time from other areas of our life.

And it was worth it. Amazingly, in 18 months with this company, we duplicated the renewal income that took us ten years to develop in the pension business. Over the last 14 years, I have been able to maintain and even enhance my pension practice, AND enjoy a partnership with my wife as we have built this home-business together. As our children leave our home and begin their adult lives we are excited to know that we will be able to take our business to new levels. Most importantly, we have been able to build a business that we know will be our legacy for our children.

Ten years ago I was at a crossroads. I enjoyed tremendous fulfillment in my career as a therapist, professional speaker, and spiritual director. I owned two holistic counseling and wellness centers but, in reality, my businesses owned me - I had no time for what mattered to me. My new husband took early retirement from the University of Maryland and I felt the urge to make time for us. At the same time, I found myself speaking at an annual conference for Women and Infant's Program in Oncology, and that experience changed my life.

Speaking on stage at the Ritz Carlton in Boston, on the integration of Spirituality and Cancer, I saw this neon sign in my mind's eye, and I heard a voice whisper, "Cynthia, life is NOT a dress rehearsal."

It was not a surprise when I was asked to facilitate a spiritual insight program for women and their families who were grappling with the challenge of cancer.

I was raised in a family which prioritized caring for others, and I followed suit personally and professionally by choosing helping professions. But the planner part of me knew that as a 50-year young boomer there was more to life than work, and IF I was ever to get back the TIME for what matters I had better take action and discover the plan B that would do just that.

That was ten years ago. Looking back, I see how instrumental those clients were in helping me transition into a career that has returned to me the time and the money to do the things I always dreamed of doing. Equally exciting, I have now created a foundation, The Lamplighter Legacy Fund, which is our vehicle to give back some of what we have been blessed to receive.
